How to paint the plaster walls

In homes built before 1960, on the inside walls they have used a combination of lath and plaster. In many older homes, these walls are still in existence and are in good enough condition for repaint. However, there are some considerations in the preparation of plaster wall paint. If you want to paint the plaster walls in your home, follow some general guidelines and have smooth walls that complement your decor.

Instructions : 

  1. Removes the old wallpaper before painting a plaster wall. While you can paint over existing paint, wallpaper, which was popular in the late twentieth century, it will bend and will bubble under a layer of paint.
  2. Prepare drywall for painting inspecting for cracks and loose plaster. Use a chisel to scrape the brittle plaster cracks before filling with premixed drywall mud.
  3. Use a spatula tape to collect enough mud to fill the crack and smooth the hole. Pulling the edge of the blade along the crack filled to smooth the mud level with the wall surface. If the crack is large, you may have to repeat the process until it is completed and smooth.
  4. Sandpaper with a wall sander equipped with a sanding pad. These sanders are adjusted extension poles, making sanding the top of the wall easier. Spend your hand on the wall after sanding to ensure that the wall is smooth. Otherwise, Sandpaper again.
  5. Vacuum the dust from the room after sanding and clean the walls with a cloth to remove dust still clung to the plaster. Leave the powder on a wall create a mottled effect on your painting.
  6. Apply primer to the brick staining drywall. Because gypsum has often discolored areas at point’s oxide colorfast through mesh or stained area existing brick primer seal these areas, avoiding to be displayed through the topcoat.

Tips & Warnings

  • Painting a light color on a dark color may require multiple coats to completely cover the old paint.
