How to paint ceramic floors

You may not like the color, but removing your tiles is not one of your options. Although you can try to cover them with a variety of carpets, the best option is to paint. This can be done easily as long as the floor is in good condition. To do this, you should use a basis of alkyd primer and paint. Latex paint will not be strong enough.

Instructions :

  1. With the help of an abrasive cleaner thoroughly clean the floor. Be sure to remove mold that is on the surface and could come back out after you’re done.
  2. Repair any cracks and crumbling compound. If you must add more grout, do before painting the tile. If you do after you will damage the paint.
  3. If your tiles are very bright use grit 220. This step is optional but will save you the trouble of having to repaint the floor. Thoroughly clean the surface after finishing sanding to remove all dust.
  4. If you do not want to paint the grout lines, place blue ribbon on them. It is much easier to paint the entire floor of one color, but the decision is yours. If you want to paint the grout, you should let it dry for 48 hours before applying the paint.
  5. Place the tape on all areas that do not want to paint, including wallpaper and borders.
  6. Apply a coat of primer. It may be a lacquer-based or oil-based.
  7. Apply a second coat of primer after the first coat has dried completely. Check the manufacturer’s instructions to determine the drying time.
  8. After it has dried completely, stroke the surface with grit 220; your objective is to eliminate the irregularities that may have formed and prepare the surface for painting.
  9. Paint the floor with a layer of alkyd paint or high gloss medium brightness. Use a brush to apply it in the corners and areas near the wall before moving the roll on the floor. For best results, apply several thin layers until you get the desired finish. Let each layer dry completely before applying the next one.
  10. Let the paint dry for a few days before applying several coats of sealer for floors. Finished with a water-based urethane is a good option for this step. Again, apply several thin coats rather than a single thick layer.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use thinning hair roller to prevent bubbles from forming and to give the floor a smooth coat. If you’re going to paint a larger area, purchase or rent an electric hand sander. Sanding, although optional, will ensure better results.
